a5c7b9f00b An amusement park for rich vacationers. The park provides its customers a way to live out their fantasies through the use of robots that provide anything they want. Two of the vacationers choose a wild west adventure. However, after a computer breakdown, they find that they are now being stalked by a rogue robot gun-slinger. Peter Martin and John Blane decide to take a holiday in a high tech amusement park, Westworld. Here they get to play cowboys - saloon brawls, saloon girls and quick draws against the town's gunslinger - with lifelike robots. All is well for the first few days but when the park's central computer malfunctions, the built-in safety features are turned off and the robots begin to attack the guests. The gunslinger in particular seems indestructible and relentlessly pursues his prey. I watched Westworld for the first time last week after having heard about it for years, and I must say it was a lot of fun. It's about a futuristic amusement park where people can come (for $1000 a day) and live out their fantasies (violent or sexual) in the Roman Empire, Medieval times, or the Old West. The two main characters (Dick Benjamin and James Brolin) seem to having a great time in the Old West park, complete without shootouts, barroom brawls, and ladies of the evening until, one day, it all goes horribly wrong. More than that I won't tell you about the plot, but I can tell you that cynics and technical sticklers will have a field day with this movie for all the flaws in the story. For one thing, it looks terribly dated and cheap, and I don't understand how you shoot real bullets and no guest ever gets hurt, even with sensors on the guns. What if you miss? What if the robot misses? (Yul Brynner misses shooting Dick Benjamin several times in the final chase scene) What if a bullet ricochets off something and hits a guest? And in the final showdown between Brynner and Benjamin, where are all the other guests? We've just seen two full days in this theme park where the place was full of guests and robots, so where did they all go at the end? Anyway, you just have suspend disbelief to enjoy this movie, which, overall is very good. Yul Brynner is superbthe glassy-eyed robot gunslinger. And my favorite moment in the picture is a small one: the chief technician (Alan Oppenheimer) in the Westworld control room picks up an in-house phone, gets no dial tone and mutters, "Doesn't anything work in this place?" Michael Crichton's thriller invariably draws comparison with the author's later JURASSIC PARK, seeingboth stories deal with amusement parks which turn into chaos. However, WESTWORLD is by far the more horrific of the two. Whereas JURASSIC PARK is a film made for children with sweet, sugary sentimentality, WESTWORLD is a brutal, nihilistic affair where the emphasis is on gritty survival horror.

And a cracker it is too. WESTWORLD succeeds in building up an elaborate picture of life at the tourist resort. While concentrating the action upon the two main actors, there are also cleverly a lot of cut scenes involving various scientists and lab technicians, and other events taking place at the rest of the resort, so that a picture may build up of the entire proceedingsa whole. This gives the film an authentic sense of scale. The leisurely pace may put off some viewers (it's more than halfway through the film before the horror really begins) but it's well worth sitting through,a fun depiction of life in a wild west town.

The actual mechanical breakdown of the resort is played out nicely, with small events gradually building up into actual death, and the cold murder of James Brolin is very shocking upon first viewing. From then on it's man vs. machine in an early TERMINATOR kind of way. Brynner is definitely a lot like the unstoppable android that Schwarzenegger was, and we can safely say that WESTWORLD is an early version of the killer android on the loose story. Brynner's inhumanity is showed by shots of his computerised vision (quite basic from a modern perspective) and his special powers, suchincreased hearing and being able to survive acid thrown in the face. The whole ending of the film, the last 20 minutes, is absolutely fantastic and will have you on the edge of your seat before the inevitable showdown occurs, and then there are still one or two shocks left to make you jump a little.

Richard Benjamin (more familiara director) is realisticthe everyday Joe caught up in the events who has to fend for himself, while James Brolin has a field daythe laconic sidekick who knows all the tricks. However, the film really belongs to Yul Brynner, who is superbly castthe cold, android villain, who even manages to gain our sympathy at the end of the film (where he is blinded by the fire). With actual effective special effects, a haunting soundtrack, and lots of important messages about relying on machines too much, WESTWORLD is a total sci-fi classic blending futuristic thrills and wonder with a cold, harsh feeling of dread. One to own. Westworld is an excellent film, which combines solid entertainment, chilling topicality, and superbly intelligent serio-comic story values. Michael Crichton's original script issuperiorhis direction. It could have been a prototype test for future models.

Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robotswas mentioned by the scientists.
